CORONADO , Calif., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Fur Commission USA has put up $100,000 as a reward for information leading to the conviction of those behind releases of mink from ranches.
Teresa Platt, the group's executive director, said that the reward involves six incidents, The Portland Oregonian reported. The first occurred in April in Jefferson, Ore., and there have been two more in that state, two in Utah and one in British Columbia.
In the most recent release, about 1,500 mink pens were opened Friday at Ylipelto's Fur Farm in Astoria, Ore., the report said. Platt said that at least 35 escaped mink are known to have died, including 20 killed by dogs with most of the rest hit by cars.
Platt said that the Animal Liberation Front and other extreme animal rights groups have claimed responsibility for all the releases. A group calling itself the Vegan Straight Edge Community or VSE said it was responsible for Friday's action.
"It could be one Western cell, one very active Western cell," Platt said.
An FBI spokeswoman said that mink releases are under investigation.
