TIJUANA, Mexico, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Police in the Mexican state of Baja California report a weekend series of killings as a result of the continuing turf war between drug cartels.

At least four municipal police officers and a district police chief were killed and police also discovered three metal bins containing human remains in Tijuana, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Three slayings occurred in the eastern portion of Tijuana, including the killing of a municipal police officer whose decapitated body was found on a road between Tijuana and Tecate.

Authorities in Playas de Rosarito reported that a group of armed men stormed the home of the district police chief of La Presa and killed him in front of his family.

The newspaper says officials attribute the wave of violence to a war between at least two drug cartels fighting for turf in Tijuana, a border city often used to smuggle drugs into the United States.
