JAKARTA, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- A strong earthquake Monday shook Indonesia's Tolitoli district in the central Sulawesi province but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake in the Gulf of Tomini was of 6.0 magnitude and its epicenter was off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, about 90 miles northeast of Palu, CNN reported.

Residents in the region rushed out of their homes, Antara news agency reported.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity, the report said.

In December 2004, an earthquake-triggered tsunami hit the archipelago's Aceh province, killing an estimated 168,000 people.
