Family bringing backpacker's body home

DUBROVNIK, Croatia, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- The father, brother and boyfriend of an Australian backpacker threw flowers Thursday into the bay in Croatia where her body was found.

The three were to leave Dubrovnik on Friday, accompanying Britt Lapthorne's body back to Melbourne, The Age reported.

A fisherman found the body Oct. 6, and it was positively identified by DNA a few days later.

Lapthorne, 21, had been missing for about three weeks. She was staying in a hostel in Dubrovnik and was last seen leaving a nightclub.

"You know, I can bear the grief, her mum … Elke can bear the pain. Even Darren could manage," Dale Lapthorne, Britt's father said. "The pain that we cannot bear is all those things that she wanted to do and will never get the chance."

Lapthorne, his son, Darren, and Simon Imberger went by boat from the area of the nightclub into the Bay of Boninovo. Imberger selected "Mansard Roof" by the New York group Vampire Weekend for, which was on Britt's iPod.

"It is happy, vibrant, like her," Imberger told the newspaper.

Investigators have not determined how the young woman died or if she was killed. Her family plans to have a second autopsy done in Victoria.
