OTTAWA, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Police in Buckingham, Quebec, were investigating an apparently freak accident in which a tombstone toppled and killed a 77-year-old man tending a grave.

At 7:18 p.m., a visitor to the St. Gregoire cemetery across the Ottawa River from Ottawa noticed an abandoned car and called police, Constable Isabelle Poirier said.

Officers began searching the cemetery and found the man dead under the tombstone, the Ottawa Citizen reported.

"It appears he moved the stone and was digging a hole around the foundation when the concrete block fell on his back," Poirier said.

The grave was where the unidentified man's parents are buried, the report said.
