VATICAN CITY, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- An estimated 25,000 people watched Sunday as Pope Benedict XVI canonized four saints of the Roman Catholic Church, said Vatican officials.

Many had come from India for the canonization of Sister Alphonsa, born in 1910 and the first Indian woman to be elevated to sainthood, reported Howrah News Agency.

The others elevated to sainthood Sunday included Gaetano Errico, born in 1791 in Italy; Mary Bernard, born in 1848 in Switzerland and Narcisa De Jesus Martillo Moran, born in 1832 in Ecuador.
