Grizzly pays penalty for human death

BERGEN, Alberta, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A female grizzly bear believed to be the killer of a Canadian hunter was shot and killed in Alberta.

Fish and Wildlife officials said that, after the bear was killed Thursday, DNA tests confirmed it mauled Robert Wagner, 48, who died last week while hunting moose with a bow, the Calgary Herald reported.

The bear was tracked by wildlife officers in a helicopter after a local resident reported it.

Duncan MacDonnell of Sustainable Resource Development said officers were trying to locate the sow's three cubs. They are believed to be old enough to survive without their mother but may be relocated.

MacDonnell refused to give details on where the sow was killed.

"We have crews out there right now installing bear traps to get the three sub-adults that were traveling with the sow, and we don't really need to have a bunch of people out there," he said.

Wagner's death, a little more than a mile from a highway, scared local farmers. Some told the Herald that grizzlies appear to be more common.
