The Bucks County Board of Elections voted Friday to move the polling place in Bensalem, Pa., to a wellness center after it had earlier been removed from an apartment complex of mainly black and immigrant residents to a Polish-American social hall, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
The first move sparked a lawsuit being heard in U.S. District Court. Board members said it was done to accommodate some residents who claimed they were afraid of the high crime rate around the Creekside Apartments.
But apartment residents objected, saying the polling station had been there for many years and contained about 75 percent of the precinct's voters. They have accused Republican board members of a politically inspired move to disenfranchise the mainly Democratic voters at the complex, the newspaper said.
By a 2-1 vote, the polling site was moved from Polanka Hall about one mile south to the St. Mary Wellness Center, a move the Inquirer said didn't satisfy some Creekside residents at the meeting.
