Clashes continue in Israeli city of Acre

ACRE, Israel, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Violence between Israeli Muslims and Jews continued for a fourth day Saturday in the ancient city of Acre.

Arab leaders planned to meet with police commanders Saturday evening, and police patrolled the city, Haaretz reported.

The trouble began late Wednesday on the eve of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year. An Arab man drove into a Jewish neighborhood, and local residents decided he was being deliberately provocative.

An assault on the driver, who said he was picking up his daughter, was followed Thursday by Arab protests that sometimes turned violent.

Two apartments belonging to Arabs were burned.

At least 40 stores and 100 cars have been damaged during the clashes. Police said about 30 people were arrested.

Arab and Jewish leaders planned to meet late Saturday to discuss the mayor's decision to cancel a theater festival held during the Jewish Sukkot holiday. They planned to request the mayor to reverse his decision.
