MIAMI, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A hurricane warning was posted early Friday in Mexico's Baja California peninsula as Hurricane Norbert bore down with 85 mph winds, U.S. forecasters said.

The warning covered the area between Punta Andresito to Agua Blanca, while a hurricane watch was in effect from south of Agua Blanca southward to Cabo San Lucas and northward around the peninsula to Loreto.

At 2 a.m. PDT, the center of Hurricane Norbert was located about 315 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California, moving toward the north-northwest near 8 mph, forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles, the report said.

The Category 1 storm was not expected to have any significant change in strength over the next 24 hours, although a turn toward the north and north-northeast is expected Friday, bringing Norbert near, or to the peninsula early Saturday, forecasters said.

A five-day tracking map with many possibilities for variation shows tropical storm precipitation from Norbert affecting Arizona and western Texas by Sunday night.
