BOSTON, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Boston Mayor Thomas Menino is recovering at home following knee surgery, his office said Friday.

Menino, who suffered the knee injury at a Red Sox rally last year, had two pieces of torn cartilage removed from his right knee, the Boston Globe reported Friday.

"His spirits are high and he is appreciative of all of the many well-wishes he's received," said mayor's spokeswoman Dot Joyce. "He sounds great."

The mayor will begin physical therapy next week, the newspaper reported.

The surgery took less than an hour and required only local anesthesia, Joyce said. The procedure was done at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Mass.
