Car bombing trial begins in London

LONDON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Two British doctors went on trial Thursday in London on terrorism charges stemming from failed car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow, Scotland.

Bilal Abdulla, 29, and Mohammed Asha, 28, have said they are innocent of charges of conspiracy to murder and conspiracy to cause explosions, The Times of London reported.

Prosecutor Jonathan Laidlaw said the pair wanted to kill innocent people and grab publicity, The Daily Telegraph reported.

"Their plan was to carry out a series of attacks on the public using bombs concealed in vehicles," Laidlaw said. "No warnings were to be given and the cars were to be positioned in busy urban areas."

The alleged attacks were to began early on June 29, when two Mercedes vehicles containing petrol, gas cylinders and nails were driven into London's West End, prosecutors said. One was discovered outside of a nightclub and the other was towed to an impound lot. Police discovered both vehicles by happenstance and neutralized them, The Times said.

In Glasgow a burning Jeep was driven into the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport. A third man, Kafeel Ahmed, 28, died about a month later from burns he received in the airport attack.
