CAMP PENDLETON, Calif., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A brush fire that burned more than 1,000 acres on the sprawling Camp Pendleton Marine base in southern California has been contained, officials said Thursday.

No structures were reported damaged in the blaze that broke out late Wednesday in a remote area of the base, The Los Angeles Times said. The fire, of undetermined origin, was reported no longer spreading late Thursday morning.

The base golf course, which was evacuated Wednesday, will remain closed as will the horse trails, the newspaper said.

Dozens of firefighters, aided by helicopters and air tankers, fought the blaze that was burning out of control at nightfall. The fire was visible in both northern San Diego County and southern Orange County.
