Tropical Storm Marco hits Mexican coast

MIAMI, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Short-lived Tropical Storm Marco was reduced to a tropical depression hours after it came ashore Tuesday afternoon on the Gulf Coast of Mexico.

By 10 p.m. CDT, the storm's maximum sustained winds were just 25 mph, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported.

Marco came ashore shortly after noon as a compact storm. By 1 p.m. CDT, its winds had dropped from 50 mph to 40.

At 10 p.m. CDT, the storm was 70 miles south of Tuxpan and 100 miles west-northwest of Veracruz, moving westward at about 6 mph.

Pemex, Mexico's state-owned oil company, said 33 workers were evacuated from four oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, CNN reported. Pemex also temporarily closed six wells.
