Yard signs for McCain rare in Vermont
UNDERHILL CENTER, Vt., Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The owners of a small market in the state of Vermont say their support of Republican John McCain has nothing to do with his chances in the Green Mountain State.
Cedric and Laura Wells say they posted a yard sign for McCain outside their Wells Corner Market in Underhill Center because it is important to voice your opinion, USA Today reported Monday.
"You've got to voice your opinion no matter what," said Cedric Wells, 53.
Wife Laura, 50, agreed, telling USA Today: "We live in a liberal town but we love our neighbors. We discuss politics and religion -- all the stuff you're not supposed to."
A September poll of likely voters conducted by the American Research Group indicates Vermont favors Democrat Barack Obama over McCain 58 percent-38 percent.
Once a conservative stronghold, Vermont hasn't voted for a Republican for president since 1988.
