Rash of political vandalism in Toronto

TORONTO, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Toronto police were investigating 26 weekend cases of car brake lines being cut of people with Liberal Party election posters at their homes.

Some of the cases involved cutting telephone and cable lines to homes with Liberal Party signs in their windows or yards, the Toronto Star reported.

Saturday, 14 incidents were reported in the central riding of St. Paul, then Sunday, 12 more to the west in Parkdale-High Park, police said.

In some cases, a key was used to scratch a large letter "L" on cars, while others had the letter spray-painted in red on their homes, the Star said.

Carolyn Bennett, Liberal incumbent for St. Paul's, told the newspaper such tactics have no place in Canada's political system.

"We want more people in Canada to participate in the democratic process," Bennett said. "We don't want people to feel it's too dangerous to put up a Liberal sign during an election."

The country goes to the polls Oct. 14.
