SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said Friday he will cooperate with a federal investigation into his city's sanctuary policy on undocumented aliens.
City Attorney Dennis Herrera told the San Francisco Chronicle he has hired lawyers to represent city workers who may be called to testify before a grand jury or provide documents. He said a federal grand jury subpoenaed city documents several weeks ago.
San Francisco adopted a sanctuary policy about 20 years ago, banning the use of city funds to catch illegal aliens. The law was originally intended to protect refugees from civil war in Central America.
About 80 cities and five states have similar policies.
Joshua Eaton, a spokesman for U.S. Attorney Joseph Russoniello, refused to comment. Russoniello has been critical in the past of the city's policy toward undocumented immigrants.
