Vice presidential candidates debate at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A CBS News fact check of Thursday night's vice presidential debate in St. Louis found both Delaware Sen. Joe Biden and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin misstated facts.

Both candidates made misleading charges about votes by the candidate at the top of the other ticket, CBS found.

Biden claimed that Sen. John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, voted to cut off funding to the troops in Iraq -- McCain opposed an amendment to the bill that included a withdrawal timeline. Palin repeated a false, but frequently made, Republican claim that Sen. Barack Obama voted 94 times for tax increases, CBS said.

Palin described herself as a consistent tax cutter in Alaska but did not mention a sales tax increase she proposed as mayor of Wasilla to fund a hockey rink. Biden, on the other hand, defended Obama's vote for the 2005 Energy Bill but did not say he voted the other way.

Overall, Palin appeared to have somewhat more trouble with the facts than Biden, CBS concluded.
