BEIJING, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- The Chinese government's quality watchdog has released a list of approved agencies that test dairy products for melamine.
The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine released the list of more than 300 agencies Thursday and said it would continue to add "credible" agencies to the directory, Xinhua, China's official state-run news agency, reported Friday.
The move comes after approximately 13,000 infants were hospitalized in the country for kidney problems tied to baby formula that had been tainted with melamine. The formula was tied to three infant deaths. Authorities said the toxic chemical had been added to the raw milk to make its protein content appear higher.
