MELBOURNE, Fla., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- A community college on the east coast of Florida was locked down Thursday after a homemade explosive went off in an elevator shaft.
Brevard County Assistant Fire Chief Greg Anglin described the bomb as "some kind of improvised explosive device," WKMG-TV reported. The blast occurred at 11:15 a.m. on the Melbourne campus of Brevard Community College.
"They said that they heard what sounded like a large door slamming and saw smoke coming from the elevator," said William Heinz, who talked to witnesses. "People were unsure what was going on and they seemed confused and panicky."
Firefighters got students and employees out of the multipurpose building where the explosion occurred.
Lew Shelpman, the college security coordinator, said that the explosive material was in a glass bottle or jar.
