PHOENIX, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Two American Bulldogs were shot by police after the animals allegedly attacked a city worker in Phoenix, police say.
Phoenix police spokesman Tony Morales said officers responding to a 911 call Tuesday allegedly found the male and female dogs dragging a bloodied body. The officers then shot the animals, The Arizona Republic reported.
"He was in a life-threatening situation," Morales said of the victim, identified as street maintenance foreman Carl Corona.
Police said Corona is expected to survive bites to his face, chest and arms allegedly caused by the dogs, estimated to have weighed more than 60 pounds each, the Republic said.
While a neighbor told police the dogs had an owner in the area, Working American Bulldog Association official Kathleen Snope told the Republic the canine breed isn't an ideal pet choice.
"American Bulldogs are not the ideal pet for most people," Snope told the newspaper. "They require a lot of training and socialization ... Most families don't want to put that kind of training into a pet."
