Detroit couple build Obama lawn signs

DETROIT, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A Detroit couple has spent about $1,500 of their own money to make lawn signs for their neighbors supporting Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Susan and Carl Smith, whose lawn care business has slowed, have spent their free time making the Obama lawn signs, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

"To me, it's not even a sacrifice -- it makes us feel good," said Susan Smith. "It's a natural high to see the look on people's faces, to see their smiles and happy words. It makes me feel great."

The Smiths said their "Operation Obama Sign" started about two weeks ago, when they were lying in bed talking about all the "for sale" and foreclosure signs in their neighborhood.

The newspaper reported that neither Carl, 45, nor Susan, 47, has ever voted in any election.

"This year something inspired me, and it was Barack Obama," Susan Smith said. "It's the first time in my life that I've ever been inspired to vote. We can't wait to go down to the polls."
