U.S. targets eight alleged FARC members

WASHINGTON, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Eight alleged members of a Colombian rebel group have had their U.S. assets frozen and were designated as supporters of terrorism, U.S. officials said.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, widely known by its Spanish acronym FARC, has been deemed a "narco-terrorist organization," and the eight individuals designated by U.S. officials allegedly represent its interests in foreign countries, CNN reported Tuesday.

"Today's designation exposes eight 'International Commission' members of the FARC," Adam Szubin, director of U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, told CNN. "Through their service to the FARC as international representatives and negotiators, these persons provide material support to a narco-terrorist organization."

The eight people targeted allegedly represent the FARC in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Panama, Mexico and Canada, Szubin said.
