ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Pakistani army chief Ashfaq Kayani appointed Lt. Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha to be the head of the powerful spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence.

Pasha, currently the director general of military operations, replaces Lt. Gen. Nadeem Taj, who was appointed by former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf, Pakistan's News International reported. Taj becomes a corps commander.

As part of his major reshuffle of the army's top command, Kayani also changed four of the nine corps commanders and appointed a new chief of general staff, Dawn reported.

The shake-up was seen as being the most wide-ranging since Kayani took over as the army chief and comes at a time when there Pakistan has come under increasing criticism of not doing enough to control militant groups, which operate from its territory and attacks U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan.

The Dawn report described Pasha as a highly professional soldier, who has been overseeing the operations against the Taliban insurgency in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.

An official in the administration of U.S. President George Bush told The Washington Post the appointment of Pasha to head the ISI will give the new Pakistani government a chance to work out a set of new directions for the spy agency. There had been concerns in the United States about alleged ties between some officials in the Pakistani intelligence service and the Taliban.
