DETROIT, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has returned to the city from Dallas to await sentencing on his felony convictions, his lawyer says.
Kilpatrick left Detroit almost two weeks ago after pleading guilty to charges stemming from false testimony he gave at a police whistle-blower trial and needed to return before his court-authorized out-of-state travel permissions expired Monday night, The Detroit Free Press reported.
Kilpatrick attorney Juan Mateo said he had arrived back in the city within the allotted time and is now awaiting his sentencing hearing in Wayne County Circuit Court.
The hearing is set for Oct. 28. Under a plea deal, Kilpatrick is to receive 120 days in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice and no contest to a felony assault charge arising from the so-called text message scandal, The Free Press reported.
