SEATTLE, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Police in Federal Way, Wash., are searching for the mother of a newborn girl abandoned on a cold night at the entrance to a church.
The infant, estimated to be 6 hours old, was exposed to 49-degree temperatures for hours before she was found by a church employee and taken to a hospital, where she was listed in fair condition, The Seattle Times reported Monday.
Washington state law allows parents to surrender newborns without identifying themselves at any hospital or fire station that has staff available to provide immediate care. Dropping off a newborn at a church is a class C felony, a police spokeswoman told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
A surveillance video shows a young woman leaving an infant swaddled in a bloody beach towel at the entrance to the Steel Lake Presbyterian Church about 2:15 a.m. Sunday.
Police say car lights seen shortly after the baby is abandoned indicate the woman may have arrived in a vehicle.
