Families coping with intruder's death

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Two Indianapolis families say they are struggling to understand why a 52-year-old man allegedly broke into a home and was apparently killed by its owner.

Bill Meyers said his family was attempting to understand what motivated his older brother, David, to allegedly break into a teenage girl's room and become engaged in a fatal struggle with her father, The Indianapolis Star said Monday.

"Of the families on the lane, we're all kind of grieving together," Meyers said, referring to the family of Robert McNally, the man who allegedly killed his brother. "Everybody seems to have taken the position that Dave kind of snapped."

The situation began early Sunday morning when David Meyers, a 52-year-old registered sex offender, allegedly broke into the room of McNally's teenage daughter. Police allege that McNally responded to his daughter's screams and struggled with Meyers, who was allegedly naked and armed with a knife.

No official cause of death has been determined in the case but McNally was found by police with his arm on the alleged intruder's neck.

McNally told the Star the incident has shocked both families.

"Nobody wins," McNally said. "It's a lose-lose situation for everybody."
