Iraq kidnappers offer hostage body release

BAGHDAD, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Iraqi kidnappers who abducted five British men last year have offered to hand over the body of a hostage who allegedly committed suicide, sources say.

In return for the body of a hostage identified only as Jason, the kidnappers are demanding the release of 10 Iraqi women held by U.S. forces and an unspecified number of elderly Iraqi detainees, The Sunday Times of London reported.

"(Jason) will be handed over to the Iraqi government, who in turn can hand him to the British and to his family on condition that all women prisoners being held in American prisons, as well as the old and innocent aged men, are freed," an unidentified intermediary told the newspaper.

A video given to The Times two months ago showed Jason and claimed he had killed himself May 25, four days before the first anniversary of the five's Baghdad abduction. However, the British Foreign Office says it never received any corroboration of the claim.

British information technology consultant Peter Moore and his four bodyguards were seized by up to 40 Iraqis dressed as police officers in May 2007.
