Female Afghan police officer slain

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Motorcycle gunmen shot and killed a female Afghan police officer and her son sustained injuries in the Kandahar attack, officials said Sunday.

A government spokesman identified as Malalay Kakar, the first female police officer in the one-time Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. He said Kakar and her son, whose name or age were not given, were emerging from their home when assailants on motorcycles sped up and shot them, the Kuwait News Agency, KUNA, reported.

Kakar died instantly and her son was taken to a hospital.

Taliban spokesman Yousaf Ahmadi claimed responsibility for the attack, KUNA reported. Kakar was the fourth female official to be killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan.
