British women on different career path

LONDON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- A new British study finds about as many women now work outside the home as men but they tend to follow different career paths.

The Office of National Statistics reported Friday that 90 percent of women work in the service sector, while 75 percent of men do, the Financial Times said.

About half of women's jobs are part-time, while only one in six jobs held by men are less than full-time.

About 75 percent of self-employed workers are male, which has held steady since 1997.

While 73 percent of childless women are in the workforce, just over two-thirds of women with dependent children work, 38 percent of them part-time. Only 4 percent of men with dependent children work part-time.

The percentage of women working in manufacturing has dropped from about 15 percent in 1985 to 5 percent. The skilled trades are overwhelmingly male, with women in 10 percent of jobs.

Men are also more likely to occupy senior office positions, although one in five employed women work in offices compared to 4 percent of men.
