Firehouse partly closed after rat bite

GLENS FALLS, N.Y., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Firefighters have stopped sleeping and eating at one of two firehouses in Glens Falls, N.Y., after one man was bitten, apparently by a rat.

The Broad Street station will be staffed during the day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Glens Falls Post-Star reported. But city officials said Wednesday that firefighters will sleep at the Ridge Street Station.

Acting Mayor John Diamond said that the firefighter who was bitten Saturday did not see what attacked him. He was wakened and then discovered he had "two little spike marks" on his nose. He returned to work after getting a tetanus shot.

Fire Chief Raymond Ives said that in the past three weeks several large rodents have been spotted around the firehouse. Officials are unsure what caused the apparent rat infestation and also unsure how to get rid of the rodents.
