Rice: N. Korea's move means isolation

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- North Korea's action to resume nuclear production will only make the country more isolated, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday.

The country's leaders have asked the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency to remove its seals and cameras, and has decided to expel U.N. monitors from its main nuclear complex in Yongbyon as they seek to resume nuclear production.

If North Korea moves ahead with its plans, "it would only deepen its isolation," Rice said during a media availability in New York.

She said she and other leaders of the other countries involved in denuclearization of the Korean peninsula were discussing the situation "on what steps we might need to take" and ensure the nations are "carrying the same message to North Korea about their obligations" for verifying their list of nuclear activities.

North Korea's decision to resume nuclear production doesn't mean talks are dead, she said.

"We've been through ups and downs in this process before," she said.
