Reid: Senate work far from finished

WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Tuesday the chance of Congress finishing its work by this weekend is slim.

The Nevada Democrat said the Senate will have to either extend the session or return for a lame-duck session, The Hill reported.

"It looks like more every day that the Senate is going to have to return after this weekend," he said.

The Senate has to deal with legislation authorizing a Wall Street bailout and continuing resolutions to fund the federal government.

Reid blamed Republicans for an omnibus package of 34 spending bills being blocked by Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla.

"Senator Coburn may be the person that made the objection, but we've attempted to move forward on this and he has been joined by his Republican colleagues," Reid said.
