WARREN, Ohio, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A newborn girl in Ohio was killed by her parents' pet dog the morning after she was brought home from the hospital, police said.
Lt. Don Bishop of the Warren Police Department said the dog, a husky, may have mistaken the 3-day-old baby for a stuffed animal, the Warren Tribune Chronicle reported.
The baby was in a bassinette at the time of the attack Monday morning. The father left the room for a few minutes and returned to find his daughter had been attacked.
The baby was pronounced dead at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Bishop said the child had been bitten and scratched over her entire body.
The Trumbull County dog warden has custody of the husky. Its ultimate fate has not been decided.
Bishop said the baby was the couple's first child. He would not release their identity, saying he wanted to protect their privacy.
