Islamic rights group files FEC complaint

WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- An Islamic civil rights group Tuesday said it filed a complaint with the U.S. elections watchdog asking it to investigate DVDs sent to swing states.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations urged the Federal Election Commission to investigate the distribution of 28 million DVDs with what the organization said was an anti-Muslim film.

In its FEC complaint, the group said the Clarion Fund financed the distribution of the DVDs of the film "Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West" in what "many political analysts describe as 'swing' states in the upcoming presidential elections."

The analysts said the distribution of the DVD was designed "to benefit a particular presidential candidate, namely Sen. John McCain," the Republican nominee, the complaint read.

CAIR said funding for the production, marketing and distribution of "Obsession" may have originated from an Israeli group.

Nihad Awad, CAIR executive director, said they've received complaints from several people who received the DVD.

"American voters deserve to know whether they are the targets of a multimillion-dollar campaign funded and directed by a foreign group seeking to whip up anti-Muslim hysteria as a way to influence the outcome of our presidential election," Awad said.
