Although authorities believe an incident Monday in which a 19-year-old East Jerusalem man rammed a car into a crowd, injuring 17, was not a terrorist attack but a more ordinary crime, Israeli military officials say they want more authority to quickly raze the homes of East Jerusalem attackers, Ynetnews reported.
The Web site said Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak discussed razing homes during an overnight security assessment, a tactic that has in the past been frustrated by legal challenges that delay the bulldozings for so long, officials say they lose their effectiveness as a terrorism deterrent.
"We have to find the way to act swiftly, so anyone thinking about an attack would see its potential results and effects on their life," an unnamed IDF source told Ynetnews.
Intelligence figures indicate an increase in the number of East Jerusalem residents involved in terror attacks in recent years, with 340 alleged terrorists from there arrested between 2001 and June 2008.
