Bush confident Congress will pass bailout

NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush expressed confidence that Congress would pass a bill that would stabilize the U.S. financial markets.

In New York to address the United Nations, Bush said he's assured world leaders that the $700 billion plan outlined by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson "is a robust plan to deal with a serious problem" and that congressional leaders of both parties told him they have "the desire to get something done quickly."

The legislative process includes give-and-take, Bush said during an appearance with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari.

"There are good ideas that need to be listened to in order to get a good bill out that will address the situation," Bush said, adding that he believed Republicans and Democrats would unite to pass the legislation, "which is necessary to address the financial situation and provide a rescue plan to make sure that there's some stability in the markets."
