Bill: Hillary did not want to be VP

NEW YORK, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton's husband, Bill, says she did not want to become Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic U.S. presidential ticket.

Former President Clinton said his wife would have felt duty-bound to accept the position, but she enjoys her role as a U.S. senator from New York, ABC News reported Monday.

Clinton said his wife would have been the best choice for Obama politically, "at least in the short run, because of her enormous support in the country." Speaking on The View, Clinton said he believes sexism played a part in his wife's failed bid to become the Democratic nominee.

"There is some (sexism) but a lot it is almost subconscious, that makes it more insidious," he said.

Clinton also said he admires Republican presidential nominee John McCain but believes Obama will win the presidency because he is a "smart candidate" supported by a party that is larger and more diverse than the Republican Party.
