Baltimore council to honor slain ex-member

BALTIMORE, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Members of the Baltimore City Council say they will honor former councilman Kenneth N. Harris Sr., who was fatally shot in an armed robbery.

Councilman Robert W. Curran said to honor Harris, who was killed during the weekend outside an area jazz club, the council will use Monday night's meeting to remember the late city official and his accomplishments, The Baltimore Sun reported.

"He was very integral in city politics," Curran said of the 45-year-old, who died Saturday night. "I'm a dinosaur. But he was one of the up-and-comers."

Harris lost his bid for third council term last year after two terms oriented toward making Baltimore neighborhoods safe from crime.

Meanwhile, others attempting to honor the passing of the former councilman have begun placing bouquets of flowers outside New Haven Lounge, the site of his death.

While police have released a photograph of a blood-splattered Halloween mask to the media in hopes of learning more about its link to the homicide, police spokesman Troy Harris told the Sun investigators were keeping more details secret for now.

"Right now, we're going to keep a lot of that under wraps so we can do the investigation to the most accurate extent," the officer said.
