AA jetliner has close call at O'Hare

CHICAGO, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- An American Airlines passenger jet, diverted to Chicago with an electrical problem, blew a tire and slightly overshot the runway Monday, officials said.

No injuries were reported among the 185 passengers or crew aboard Flight No. 268, the Chicago Tribune reported. The Boeing 757, which had been headed from Seattle to New York when an electrical systems problem caused it to be sent to Chicago's O'Hare International, came to rest with its front tires and nose gear on the grass about 1:50 p.m.

"He ran out of concrete before he ran out of speed," one traffic controller source told the Tribune.

The pilots did not declare an emergency prior to touching down, the source said.

With the plane's instrument landing system non-functional, the pilots had to come in faster than normal because they could not rely on the aircraft's gauges, air traffic sources in Chicago told the Tribune.

American Airlines spokeswoman Mary Frances Fagan said the passengers were taken from the aircraft by buses to the terminal.

A spokesman for the city's Department of Aviation said the runway was closed until the disabled plane could be removed.
