Poll: Tight presidential race in Michigan

DETROIT, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain are running neck-and-neck in Michigan, according to a poll released Sunday.

The survey results issued by the Detroit News and a group of Michigan television stations show Obama, the Democrats' nominee, with a 1-point edge over McCain, the Republicans' standard-bearer, in the presidential race in a traditionally Democratic stronghold.

The results showed Obama with 43 percent of the vote, McCain at 42 percent and 10 percent undecided. Third-party hopefuls Ralph Nader and Bob Barr each pulled 2 percent.

The News said that when voters were asked about the full party tickets – including McCain running mate Sarah Palin and Obama running mate Joe Biden -- the Democrats' lead increased slightly to 45 percent to the GOP's 42 percent.

The newspaper said the results were largely unchanged from similar polls in July and August and appeared fairly uninfluenced by the headline-grabbing swoon on Wall Street in a state that has seen its fair share of economic turmoil.

The survey conducted by EPIC-MRA was conducted last week among 602 likely voters with an error margin of 4 percentage points.
