Six checks totaling $10,800 were sent Thursday to the IRS and the state of New York for taxes for three years of unreported income from Rangel's vacation properties, Rangel's office said in an exclusive New York Daily News report Saturday.
Rangel's office said government accountants determined he owed no back taxes on a vintage Mercedes he has kept parked in the House garage for the past decade, the Daily News reported, noting the congressman, because of his seniority, gets six indoor parking spots and two outdoor spots.
Rangel, through his office, told the New York newspaper he will not let pressure from House Republicans force him to resign as chairman of the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee. A House ethics panel is investigating his tax lapses, the Daily News reported.
