NEW YORK, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- A one-legged man in New York allegedly admitted to police he beat his 80-year-old mother to death with a crutch, officials said.
Sergeui Mamontov, 56, allegedly called police after the fatal beating to confess, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.
"I just killed my mother and I don't know why," a police source reportedly told the newspaper.
The Daily News reported that when police arrived, they discovered Mamontov also had tried to castrate himself. He reportedly told police he was "trying to remove the evil."
Mamontov lives in the same apartment building as his mother, Lyudmila Mamontova, but in a different apartment.
The family emigrated from Ukraine and moved into the building about a decade ago, the newspaper reported.
New York's Newsday, which listed the son's name as Sergevi Mamontova and the mother's name as Lyudmyla Mamontova, said the man also head-butted his mother several times and cut himself on his legs. Charges were pending against the son, who was being evaluated at a hospital, Newsday said.
