MOSCOW, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The Russian government is dedicated to having positive relations with the neighboring country of Georgia, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.
Medvedev said despite the military conflict between the two countries last month, Russia wants to restore its former good relations with the Caucasus region locale, RIA Novosti reported.
"We believe in the Georgian people's good sense and will do everything possible to restore regular, friendly relations," the head of state said.
The conflict between the two countries came about after Georgia invaded the breakaway republic of South Ossetia. Since Russia ended the international conflict with a show of force, it has officially recognized South Ossetia as a republic.
Such actions in support of South Ossetia have prompted Georgia to end diplomatic relations with Russia, RIA Novosti reported.
But Medvedev said he remains confident that his country will one day have positive with Georgia despite the presence of anti-Russian propaganda in the neighboring country.
