Grenades found in field by rural Fla. road

CASSIA , Fla., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The Lake County, Fla., Sheriff's Office reopened State Road 44 Friday after three grenades found in a field were detonated by a hazmat team.

Lake County Lt. Skott Jensen said the road was closed for more than five hours after a man picked up a paper bag he found in a field at the side of the road south of Cassia and a grenade rolled out, the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel reported Friday.

The man called the sheriff's office shortly after 7:30 a.m. Friday and the road was closed by officials at about 8 a.m.

Jensen said the sheriff's hazmat unit found two additional grenades at the scene using X-ray equipment. He said they used a charge to detonate the explosive devices.

"They don't know if they were live or not," Jensen said. "Fortunately, no one was injured."
