Adviser: Iran can target Persian Gulf area

TEHRAN, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Iranian missiles can target any foreign ship in the Persian Gulf region, an adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei says.

Senior military adviser Maj. Gen. Yahya Rahim Safavi said if war were to break out in the region, Iran has the missile capabilities to target any ship traveling through the surrounding area, the Fars News Agency said Friday.

"At a time of war no ship can pass through the region of the Persian Gulf without being in the reach of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps' coast-to-sea missiles," Safavi said.

The adviser said this week that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps weren't in charge of gulf security and wouldn't hesitate to take military action if necessary.

Iran has downplayed all talk of possible military action by the United States or Israel regarding its controversial nuclear program. But officials in the Middle Eastern country have sworn to attack interests belonging to those countries if such military action does take place, Fars reported.
