MISSISSAUGA, Ontario, Sept. 18 (UPI) -- The death of a Toronto-area man who was shot by police with a stun gun is being investigated by an independent unit, police said.

Sean Reilly, 42, went into "medical distress" after Peel Regional Police officers used an electronic Taser stun device on him in a police jail cell in Mississauga, west of Toronto, the Toronto Star reported.

Reilly was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with assault with a weapon.

The provincial Special Investigations Unit was assigned to probe the death and initially named four officers as subjects of their investigation.

SIU spokesman John Yoannou told the Star Reilly struggled with officers as they took him from a cruiser into the police station. After he was booked, he reportedly resisted again and four officers restrained him and the Taser was fired.

Last Friday, Peel officers used a Taser on one of their own constables, who was charged with three counts of assaulting police, one count of assault causing bodily harm, excess blood alcohol, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and mischief, the report said.
