WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The House of Representatives Tuesday night passed an energy legislative package that would allow drilling for oil within 50 miles of U.S. coasts.
The energy initiatives, passed on a 236-189 vote that mostly followed party lines, also would help pay for the development of alternative energy sources, The Washington Post reported. Most Republicans turned thumbs down on the package because they want to allow drilling closer to shore, the Post said.
Money for development of renewable energy sources would come from higher taxes on oil companies and through collection of royalty payments from oil drilling.
"We're not trying to give incentives to drill, we're giving incentives to invest in renewables and natural gas that will take us where we need to go," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters prior to the vote.
The legislation now goes to the Senate, where three other versions are also being weighed.
Congress has until Sept. 30 to act or the current ban on offshore drilling will expire, allowing exploration within three miles of U.S. coastlines.
