Polling place confusion mars Mass. primary

BOSTON, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Massachusetts primary elections held Tuesday produced confusion in Boston over the locations of some polling stations, activists said.

The main attraction in the primary is a Democratic contest between incumbent U.S. Sen. John Kerry and challenger Edward O'Reilly, a Gloucester, Mass., attorney. But 20 new polling stations in Boston are generating consternation, The Boston Globe reported.

The newspaper said Boston election officials began notifying voters about the changes three weeks ago, with Boston elections chief Geraldine Cuddyer saying the moves were necessary to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Some community activists say they're upset that voters did not receive more advance warning.

"There's no way in the world they should be moving them this quickly," Roxbury activist Steven Castle told the Globe, saying some elderly residents contended they hadn't received notice of the changes until Friday.

City officials pointed the finger at disagreements in the Massachusetts Legislature, where an unrelated political battle delayed state House of Representatives business for weeks.
