OXFORD, Ohio, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- An unknown number of students at Ohio's Miami University were arrested during a protest outside the university president's house, police said.
Police said the Monday night sit-in protest, which students said was sparked by President David C. Hodge's decision not to cancel Tuesday classes despite power outages, had grown to involve more than 1,000 students by midnight, WCPO-TV in Cincinnati reported Tuesday.
Authorities said at least six police agencies were called to the scene and an unknown number of students were arrested.
Police asked the protesters to disperse after the demonstration grew to block High Street outside the president's residence at about 9 p.m. Monday.
Claire Wagner, Miami University's public relations spokeswoman, said only students living off-campus are still without power. She said the campus was running on a backup generator Tuesday and the university expected regular power to be restored Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
